Discover the Superfood Power of Whole Coffee Fruit
Almost 10 years ago, while I was hiking in Africa on the hunt for an exotic tree bark, I had my first taste of whole coffee fruit. My guides were grabbing bright, red berries off the wild coffee plants near the trail, so of course I did too!
Coffee fruit doesn’t have the traditional taste associated with brewed coffee beans and it isn’t a sweet fruit. It is tart, juicy, and absolutely seductive once you know both its nutritional and environmental benefits. I’ve wanted to bring it to the world ever since that day, but the timing was never right and the technology and sourcing to maintain its nutritional properties was not available.
Using a proprietary process developed over the last 10+ years by a partner in Mexico, coffee fruit is now available in the newest Shakeology flavor, Café Latte.
How cool is that?! One of the first products that has coffee fruit in it is one that I helped formulate!!!
That makes me happy because I love to help get new important and diversified nutrient-dense foods on the market in a high-quality way so that people can actually receive the benefits! This is the first product of its kind on the market, but I’m sure more will follow, because coffee fruit flat out rocks!
Coffee fruit contains much higher levels of important nutrients than conventional coffee, so believe me, we didn’t add it to Shakeology just to offer the popular “coffee flavor.” We could have simply added coffee to do that. But conventional, processed coffee acidifies your body and comes with a monster jolt of caffeine that can have negative side effects the enteric nervous system.
Instead, we added coffee fruit to the healthiest meal of the day to make it even more powerful.
Here are just three of the health benefits that make whole coffee fruit far better than only coffee beans.
It comes down to the alchemy of nature: the perfect way food compounds are naturally combined and presented in nature. It turns out that eating the whole coffee fruit — the exterior fleshy fruit and the internal coffee bean — together creates a more powerful blend of nutrients, including antioxidants, polyphenols, and brain derived neurotrophic factors (BDNF). They are all incredibly important for your long-term health!
ANTIOXIDANT RICHNESSAll of us are trying to live the healthiest, longest life possible, and antioxidants play a huge role in that by slowing aging in our bodies and fighting free radicals.
Free radicals in your body corrode cellular membranes, damage DNA, cause oxidation and even cell death.
Um, no thanks.
There’s a tipping point when all this damage creates premature aging, chronic health conditions and even allows disease to set in: allergies, arthritis, cancer, cataracts, Parkinson’s, etc.
But antioxidants are a great rescuer! They bind to free radicals in your body and make them harmless instead of dangerous. Eating plenty of foods high in antioxidants protects your body.
Coffee fruit has been found to be higher in antioxidants than tea, vitamin C and E, and many other fruits, including much higher than infamous antioxidant-rich blueberries.
POLYPHENOL POWERHOUSEPolyphenols are an enhanced form of antioxidant found in many plants, but especially coffee fruit.
Polyphenols create the vibrant colors in fruits, berries, and vegetables, but they also protect the plants against a myriad of hazards (pathogens, oxidative damage, ultraviolet radiation, and even extreme heat, cold, etc.).
When you eat them in foods such as coffee fruit those same polyphenols “protect” your body as well, including fighting cancer cells and aging free radicals, lowering inflammation, building heart and brain health, and much more.
One specific polyphenol compound found in coffee fruit, chlorogenic acid, has an anti-diabetic and anti-obesity effect by reducing blood sugar levels and helping stabilize your weight.
What’s even cooler is coffee fruit’s neurotrophic potential. I know. Big word, but important.
BRAIN HEALTHSo your brain needs a critical protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) for healthy functioning. It supports your brain’s neurons so they can grow even faster, develop stronger connections, and stay healthy. It keeps your brain young!
BDNF is key for learning and memory. Research shows low levels of BDNF contribute to Alzheimer’s, accelerated aging, poor neural development, and many mental diseases. This BDNF is huge as there is more and more exciting, cutting-edge information and research that will improve our understanding of how this can improve brain health.
A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition compared blood levels of BDNF after people were given doses of whole coffee fruit concentrate powder, green coffee caffeine, grape seed extract, and green coffee bean extract. Coffee fruit far exceeded all others in increasing BDNF levels, raising it by 143 percent!
In another study comparing whole coffee fruit extract with brewed coffee, only the coffee fruit extract resulted in a statistically significant increase in BDNF.
Research is promising that the BDNF from coffee fruit extract can be used to help fight mental diseases.
Stay tuned as this research and findings will only get more and more exciting!
I noticed when eating coffee fruit that it doesn’t give you the short-term jolt of stimulation you get from coffee. Instead it gives you a longer lasting mental clarity. Trust me, you’ll probably notice it when you try Café Latte Shakeology.
That is just the beginning of all the ways coffee fruit benefits your health, so it is hard to believe that it has been thrown away or just used a fertilizer by coffee farmers for so many years!
Coffee fruit is an amazing superfood packed with antioxidants, polyphenols, BDNF, and so much more. The research around it will only grow. It is time the world discovered the true superfood potential of coffee fruit!
